Section D: Adaptive Equipment

Equipment List

Equipment: Limitations with equipment (weight, size, etc.) How to access equipment
Hippo Helper There isn't any head or neck support. Used to provide support for low tone and trunk support. You can add pieces to it to form layers for more support if needed. All equipment can be found in the tack room.
Anti-cast Doesn't help much with building the core muscles and can also get in the way when trying to lean forward. Originally used to keep horses from rolling over in their stalls but in this case is used for participants that need more support and something to hold on to that is in front of them. All equipment can be found in the tack room.
Gate Belt Sometimes hard to use depending on the participants weight and height. Used for extra stabilization. All equipment can be found in the tack room.
Rainbow Reins/ Knotted Reins/ Ladder Reins Can be distracting to the participant, depending on length the reins can get in the way or have a texture that a participant doesn't like. Or if the reins are colorful it can be distracting or confusing if the participant is color blind. The reins are a visual for the participants to look to see where they need to hold or they can feel based on the knots in the reins. All equipment can be found in the tack room.
Break Away Stirrups/ Safety Stirrups The stirrups if they are not checked and maintained the band can become twisted or worn and will not be affective. Also if the band is on the inside so that its closest to the horse it won't be affective in that way so always make sure the band is on the outside. The band on the stirrups allows for an emergency dismount if an issue arises because the band will break away when pressure is applied from a foot getting pulled against the band. All equipment can be found in the tack room.
Phony Ponies The springs can come loose so that the phony pony doesn't bounce as much. It can be a distraction to the participant. The phony ponies are a way to keep the participant busy while the instructor is taking the last steps to get the horse ready. I can also be a way for the child to feel the movement of a horse before that get on, also practicing steering and mounting and dismounting. All equipment can be found in the tack room.
Hand Hold It can both get in the way and can be forgotten about and left either on the saddle. The hand hold is for participants that don't want to or cant hold their reins so you clip the hand hold over the saddle so they can hold it. It also provides better stabilization for the participant when the horse is trotting. All equipment can be found in the tack room.
Different Sized Grooming Brushes Keeping track of all the brushes and keeping them organized into the right grooming boxes. Having different brush sizes for the participants makes it easy for them to groom the horse and take part in getting the horse ready. All equipment can be found in the tack room.
