According to the agency website: The birthplace one of America's great poet's, Walt Whitman, the house is an interesting example of unusual American architecture. Built c. 1819 by Whitman's father, this newly restored farmhouse is a New York State Historic Site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site houses historic nineteenth-century furniture, including an old schoolmaster's desk. Walt Whitman State Historic Site also features an interpretive center which includes more than 100 portraits, original letters, manuscripts, and artifacts. Additional on-site activities include guided tours, a film, giftshop/bookstore and a scenic picnic area.
