The Caliope Library is located at 170 Dyckman Street, New York, NY (At Upper most part of Manhattan); accessible from mass transportation conveniently steps away from Restaurants, shopping area and multiple parks and Playgrounds: such as The Cloister Museum at Fort Tryon Park and The Nature Center at Inwood Hill park.
The “Libreria Caliope” Bookstore name comes from a Greek mythological creature, Calliope which means "beautiful-voiced", was the muse of heroic poetry, daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne, and is best known as Homer's muse, the inspiration for the Iliad and the Odyssey.
This library provides to a predominantly Dominican population, but also attracts a Latin American and European population. Many come from all over Puerto Rican’s, Cuban’s, Mexican’s South American’s, Central American’s and it’s target primary focus since it start in 1997, Dominican’s. For anyone that has been to the Northern most part of Manhattan is populated by a majority of Dominican’s which have made Washington height’s/ Inwood a smaller version of the Island of Hispaniola (name given by Christopher Columbus) or the Dominican republic as it’s known in recent times.
Owner is extremely well read and can recommend a book on any topic and from any author. Vast selection... they'll even order books not stocked. Huge selection of books by Dominican authors. His main goal is to serves all people with or without disabilities, who want to enrich their language and most of all preserve their culture. He will get almost any book you ask for as quick as possible, but with times being the way they are he tries to keep his prices as low as possible. He gets his shipments by airplane and at times does not get any commission from his sale. So he does fundraiser’s to that benefit Libreria Caliope to stay open.
Every Thursday the local bookstore feature lectures, book signings, open mic and film forums in Spanish. Great way to practice Spanish, meet writers, performers, and neighbors. Wine and crackers towards the end.
