Partnerships and Collaboration
The department works closely with the Fitness Inclusion Network throughout the year. In the past they have been involved with their annual conference; they’ve provided a number of training opportunities for their recreation staff; and they work with the organization to bring “pop up” inclusive recreation activities to city parks. They have been instrumental in coordinating the Adaptive Winter Sports Day at Sunnycrest Park. They are a tremendous resource for this community.
The department also works with Move Along, Inc to bring a free wheelchair basketball program to the Magnarelli Center. The unified program included an instructional clinic for youth and open basketball for adults. It was offered on Thursdays this past fall, and they are set to begin a Tuesday night program later this month.
Move Along is also bringing a sled hockey demonstration to Sunnycrest Rink during the school break, as part of Adaptive Winter Sports day. With Move Along, the department is looking to expand adaptive sports opportunities in the Parks.
Additionally the Syracuse Department of Parks and Recreation department has partnered with Special Olympics for youth programs (Friday night swim program with Special Olympic coaches), and snow shoe races in the parks.
