WNC Staff and Volunteers received their first disability awareness & inclusion training prior to this assessment. The Center plans to incorporate these type of training in future professional development.
Agency Planning

A former Board Member, a parent of a child with a disability, was recruited to help build the capacity for accessibility and inclusion.
Comments/additional information about agency planning:
Wehr Nature Center is actively pursuing the goal of becoming the most accessible nature center in southeast Wisconsin. Major strides have been made to make outdoor features more accessible, i.e. a renovated amphitheater and accessible boardwalk trail. Automatic doors have been installed in the front entrance and the Center is fundraising for bathroom renovations. Staff and Volunteers received disability awareness and inclusion training and the Center will be hiring its first ever summer intern with a disability.

Following this assessment, the website will be amended to include all the assessment information as well as the Accessibility and Inclusion Plan. Marketing materials will also be reviewed and updated to include more access information and more representation of people with disabilities.

Wehr Nature Center will be checking with the parent organization Milwaukee County Parks to identify which policies and procedures already exist that the center can adopt, and which still need to be created.

Wehr Nature Center will be reviewing evaluation methods to see how such feedback can be incorporated.

With accessibility and inclusion at the forefront of the agencies vision, Wehr Nature Center is focused on building its capacity to serve audiences of all abilities. In fall of 2016, WNC will be involved in focus group sessions that will be conducted as a nature needs assessment of people with disabilities. The results and recommendations of this study will help guide future work of the Center.
