The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center was started in 1983 to house a collection of animals used in a tropical forest documentary. It has grown to house over 150 animals, all local belizian animals that were orphaned, rescued, born, or rehabilitated at the zoo. The goal of the zoo is to conserve the local animals of Belize and introduce these animals to the people of Belize in hopes to inspire conservation and protect future generations. The Zoo offers a variety of educational programs and tours.
